Violence Against Women ok?

My roommate came across an article today that completely appled me. The first thing out of my mouth: Did I really just read this? An article on times online said “One in seven people believe it is acceptable in some circumstances for a man to hit his wife or girlfriend if she is dressed in ‘sexy or revealing clothes in public’”.

Yep you read that right, people think it’s ok for a man to hit woman. Seriously?!

The article goes on to say that women who wear sexy or revealing clothes should be held partly responsible for being raped. For being RAPED! An act that is forced upon them. Everyone is entitled to give or withhold consent to having sex with someone, regardless of what they are wearing.

Lets go and blame the victims for what they cannot control. Let the rapists walk away scott free and blame the people who were forced to do something they did not want to do.

Basically what the pulic is saying is that it is ok to commit violence against women.

Weekly Wrap Up

Random things that happened in my life (or life at large) this past week…

  • Job: I’ve applied and interviewed this week (different places but that’s ok) Now I just have to wait and find out what will come from that application and the interview… I should be hearing back from the interview within the next week. Finding a job (even as a nurse) is not an easy task. People tell me I should have no problem finding a job in nursing – it’s one of the more stable careers. Sure it’s stable, if you already have a job, but hospitals are affected by the economy just as much as any other business. However, instead of laying people off they take pay cuts, which means they don’t have the funds to hire new people.
  • Obama’s plan: It seems like he’s got a lot planned for the next year and the next decade. He discussed three major priorities of the US budget: energy, health care, and education. Now the question is how are these things going to be carried out? Budget cuts? Higher taxes?
  • Homework: The big question? Do I really procrastinate that much? I feel like I have a ton to do…and then I realize most of it isn’t due for at least a week, of course, my goal is to get it done early anyway. I only have 12 credits, how can I not work ahead? It has been one of those weeks where things seem to pile up, not just the homework, but the ever increasing amount of stress to find a job once I graduate.
  • US Public Schools: What are our public schools coming too? Students are being asked to bring toilet paper to school, teachers are selling advertising space on their exams in order to pay the printing. The US needs to take a better look at where it’s money is going and direct it toward the things that are really important. (Of course, who decides what is important?)

What’s going on in your life? Anything news worthy? What’s been happening in your neck of the woods that you find important?

Common Sense Has Died

To Whom It May Concern,

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.

Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn’t always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place: reports of a six-year boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, these only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandants became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, responsibility; and his son Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on; if not, join the majority and do
nothing.

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook. It has a lot of truth to it. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Proposition 8: The Muscial

I’m sure many of you have heard of Proposition 8. Well, several famous people decided to raise awareness about it and gay rights by writing and turning it into a musical. This is sort of a cop-out blog post, but enjoyable never-the-less.

Proposition 8: The Musical

I hope you all enjoy it!

Letters from the Dorms

Dear Citizens of Arizona, California, and Florida,

You recently voted to ban same sex marriages in your states. Are you all for slavery too? Or maybe you’d prefer it if women and black men were not allowed to vote?

You took away a right that should be granted to every human being. Is loving another person so wrong? If you can legally enter into marriage with someone of the opposite sex that you love, why can’t someone who feels that same sense of love for someone of the same sex, be allowed that right?

Marriage (or even a civil union or marriage without involving religion) is a basic human right that everyone should be allowed to take part in. It’s no different than giving someone the right to express themselves through speaking, writing, art, etc.

Dear Luther College,

Do you really think taking away cafe trays is going to be a good idea? Sure you are giving us [slightly] bigger plates, but what about those of us who enjoy getting everything they want to eat (and eat it all) in one trip? I for one, do not want to have to make a trip to get soup and salad, go back and get whatever is in the main line, and then go back again for a drink. And make three trips again when I’m putting away my dishes.

While I understand you think this will cause a reduction in the amount of food being wasted by the Students here and will cut down on the amount of energy and water used for washing dishes, I am skeptical. In reality, most of us take more food than we can eat because half of what we take we don’t like. (Or we find out after we’ve taken it that it contains mushrooms [or something else we don't like], which should be another letter all on it’s own.)

Taking away our precious cafe trays will just cause us to be later to class because it will take us more time to get the food we want. I question whether you really thought this through [and listened to the input that was given to you by the students].

Dear Mr. President,

Our country’s health care system is terrible. What are you going to do about it?

People everywhere are not getting the care they need because they cannot afford insurance, cannot afford to pay out of pocket, and do not qualify for medicare or medicaid. Please fix this so costs of seeking preventative care and treatment do not continue to go up (which will cause insurance to increase and leave more American’s uninsured).

Thank you,

-A citizen who likes being healthy

Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You

Marriage between homosexual individuals is a pretty hot topic right now. I could say a lot on this topic, but Olbermann does a pretty good job with it.

So, instead of letting you listen (or read rather) to me rant and rave about the idea of Gay and Lesbian marriages not being legalized, I’ll let him do it for me.

The Public has Spoken

Whether you celebrated last night or cried history has been made! Congrats to Obama for being the youngest and first bi-racial president of the United States!

Thanks to all of you that voted and made a difference to this country. As we look ahead to the next four years we can be certain that changes will be made. Some for the better and others maybe not, but remember that it was you who chose the president. So when decisions are being made about the future of our country, remember that a resounding 53% of the population chose to vote Democratic (which also gave him 349 electoral votes). You chose to support the Democratic party and so complaining about who is running our country is not necessary – you did voice your opinions at the polls and vote Obama after all!

These next for years will certainly be challenging and different, but change is not necessarily a bad thing!

So thank you, my friends, to all who voted for change!

Did you vote?

I hope everyone got a chance to get out to the poles today (and if you haven’t there is still time)! Don’t give up your opportunity to vote for the next president of our country.

For those of you who are as crazy about following the election as I am you can check out the CNN Website where they continually update the current score between the two candidates (ok I know that there are more than two, but lets face it, there might as well only be two).

So grab some popcorn and beverage of your choice sit back, and let the games begin (or rather the election)!

Candy for McCain

A friend (and current roommate) of mine wrote an interesting blog about the current presidential election and I thought I’d add my two sense.

She found a press release about a McCain supporter in Michigan. Apparently Halloween is as good a time as any to promote the candidate of your choice.

Why wouldn’t you want to withhold candy from innocent little children on Halloween? After all, they know what the election is and clearly are the ones voting.

(Sarcasm)

My goal is definitely to make them cry by not giving them candy on a holiday meant for them (Clearly!). What better way to spend the night?

I don’t openly support either candidate and I don’t disclose who I voted for until after the election, but anyone who uses candy (or anything else for that matter) to coerce people into voting for a particular candidate is worthy of my scorn.
