Violence Against Women ok?

My roommate came across an article today that completely appled me. The first thing out of my mouth: Did I really just read this? An article on times online said “One in seven people believe it is acceptable in some circumstances for a man to hit his wife or girlfriend if she is dressed in ‘sexy or revealing clothes in public’”.

Yep you read that right, people think it’s ok for a man to hit woman. Seriously?!

The article goes on to say that women who wear sexy or revealing clothes should be held partly responsible for being raped. For being RAPED! An act that is forced upon them. Everyone is entitled to give or withhold consent to having sex with someone, regardless of what they are wearing.

Lets go and blame the victims for what they cannot control. Let the rapists walk away scott free and blame the people who were forced to do something they did not want to do.

Basically what the pulic is saying is that it is ok to commit violence against women.

Break the Silence

We have been persecuted and silenced
because we are women of color.
Our lives are filled with fear for one another.
And so we wear black,
to go unnoticed.
And so we wear black,
to remain invisible.
And so we wear black,
so we don’t draw attention.
Yes, we wear black,
instead of the womanly color of crimson

But, today will be different
We will make a stand
And show the world
We have the upper hand
Today will make change
We will unite
To tell everyone
We are ready to fight
Instead of the black
Of invisible fear
We break out of our shell
A new day is near
We will not be silenced
By the color of our skin
We will not stand in fear
For this fight we will win
As women of color
We chose to be proud
To stand up to the violence
We’ve endured without a sound
For our mothers and daughters
Our neighbors and friends
For those who will follow us
We strive for an end
An end to the violence
And the hate that we bear
We stand up for the justice
That we know is there

This was written in response to something I read on Facebook about wearing red on October 31 to show support for women of color in order to show support for them as they face persecution. http://luther.facebook.com/event.php?eid=6710650492&ref=nf
